Slippery Winds 2026 Season Dates
Our 2026 fishing season will run from the walleye opener on May 16th until the end of July, 2026.
Slippery Winds’ 2025 Season
We headed into the lodge on May 10th this season. The temperatures in NW Ontario had been below normal in late April, so we experienced a late ice-out. The weather did a complete reversal and we enjoyed warm, sunny weather during our first week at the lodge, with daytime highs reaching into the high 80’s F and even into the low 90’s F.
The weather was top-of-mind this summer, as the hot, dry weather resulted in one of the worst wild fire seasons Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba had ever experienced. We were fortunate at Slippery Winds, as there were no fires in close proximity to the lodge and we experienced only a few days of heavy smoke from the fires. There was a fire ban in place until mid-June, when the weather in our area of NW Ontario changed and we had good amounts of welcome rain.
As usual, we had a few projects on the go this summer – installing a new, steel roof on cabin #2, constructing a new landing and staircase for cabin #3, work on the main dock and adding a couple of rooms to the staff cabin, plus painting and the on-going general maintenance to the buildings and equipment. We made some repairs on our main 30 kw Deutz diesel generator – replacing the injectors, cleaning the fuel system and replacing the oil and fuel filter housing, so we were able to get the generator back into service prior to the arrival of our first guests.
Our guests enjoyed some great fishing again this summer, catching and releasing a good number of trophy-quality fish in all species. Some of the notable fish caught and released by our guests are:
- 37″ northern pike – Sullivan Lake;
- 55″ muskie – Yoke Lake;
- 21″ largemouth – Sullivan Lake;
- 22″ Smallmouth – Yoke Lake;
- 29″ walleye – Yoke Lake;
- 30″ lake trout – Sullivan Lake
Looking forward to next summer, our project list includes installing a new steel roof on cabin #3, as well as our on-going maintenance of the buildings and equipment. I will be back as on-site manager in 2026 and our staff have all indicated they would like to come back next year. We look forward to seeing everyone at Slippery Winds next summer!
Wishing you tight lines and fair winds!
